Legal Counsel - Financial Crime



Purpose of the Role
A leading financial institution is seeking an experienced Financial Crime Lawyer to provide expert legal and regulatory advice on complex anti-money laundering (AML), counter-terrorist financing (CTF), sanctions, and anti-bribery and corruption (ABC) matters. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping the organisation manage legal and reputational risk, supporting both strategic initiatives and day-to-day compliance within the Markets and Corporate divisions.
Key Responsibilities
- 
Provide high-quality, commercially focused legal advice on AML, CTF, sanctions, and ABC issues. 
- 
Support the design and implementation of best-practice legal and compliance frameworks to manage financial crime risk. 
- 
Advise on financial crime compliance policies, procedures, and governance processes. 
- 
Partner with Compliance and other legal teams on regulatory inquiries, investigations, and enforcement actions. 
- 
Conduct legal research and deliver training to ensure the business remains current with evolving financial crime legislation and regulatory expectations. 
- 
Contribute to strategy development, risk management, and continuous improvement initiatives across the legal and compliance functions. 
- 
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and regulators to influence best practice and drive positive outcomes. 
Requirements
- 
Qualified lawyer (Solicitor or equivalent). 
- 
Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: AML, CTF, sanctions, or ABC. 
- 
Experience gained in-house at a financial services firm or within a law firm advising financial institutions. 
- 
Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills. 
Leadership Expectations (Vice President Level)
- 
Act as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to senior stakeholders. 
- 
Manage and mitigate legal and compliance risks through sound judgement and effective governance. 
- 
Provide mentoring and guidance to junior lawyers and team members. 
- 
Contribute to strategic decision-making, resource planning, and policy enhancement.
